Garbage Disposals

If the power to the disposal is on and it still disposal won't run, you have two options. You can tell the customer the problem is not a plumbing problem and suggest that they call an electrician or garbage disposal repair person. If you want to dig deeper, you can remove the wiring and test it to see that power is coming to the garbage disposal. If full power is at the wires, the problem is likely to be with the garbage disposal motor.
Our next service call puts you in the position of troubleshooting foul odors being emitted from a garbage disposal. The homeowner has used the garbage disposal to gobble up everything from fish to fowl, and now the odors are permeating the house.
You arrive on the job and notice the smells as soon as you walk through the door. The odor is not that of sewer gas, but it certainly is unpleasant. What are you going to do first?

Are you thinking you should check the trap first? If you are, you're on the right track, sort of. If the trap is not maintaining its water seal, odors could be rising from the drain pipe. However, since the sink and garbage disposal are being used regularly, it is unlikely the trap has lost its seal. Unless a vent has become obstructed and is allowing a symphonic action of the trap, there should be a good water seal. To be safe, you check the trap, and it is full of water, so the smells are not coming from the drain pipe. At this point you could tell the homeowner that the odor is coming from the garbage disposal, not the plumbing and leave. This would be an acceptable course of action, but there is a better one available to you, if you know what to say. Do you?
If a homeowner asks you whether it is best to flush a garbage disposal with cold water or hot water, what would you say? Many people, plumbers included, would say hot water. In fact, I used to think hot water was the best to use when flushing a garbage disposal. I found out, however, that cold water should be used. Why cold water? Cold water is said to congeal grease and carry it down the drain better than hot water. As I understand it, there is a higher likelihood of grease being caught on the sides of drainage piping if hot water is used.
