Plumbing Valves
Tub and shower valves are very reliable and seldom need repair, which is good news, because they are buried inside of a wall. Most types can be repaired, but you may decide that it's time to replace really old fixtures. This text shows you how the real challenge in replacing a tub or shower valve is getting access to the valve without destroying the wall. So, the best time to replace these valves is during a major bathroom remodeling when walls are being replaced. Otherwise, if in order to replace the valve you have to rebuild and retile the enclosure around the tub or shower, this job can get expensive.
Some house builders have anticipated problems with the plumbing coming up sometime during the life of the houses they build, and make the tub and shower valves accessible through removable panels. Depending on the floor plan of your house, these inspection panels may be located in a hallway or closets. If your house does have a panel, you can usually replace the valve without disturbing the wall in the bathroom or shower.
Many of the single-handle tub and shower valves have a large escutcheon (trim cover) that, when removed, exposes the valve body. This type of valve can be serviced and even replaced by working through the mounting hole.
Another factor to consider before taking on this job is the type of valve you are replacing. Very old valves hooked up to old galvanized pipes are particularly difficult to work with. If the old valve is installed with union fittings between the hot and cold supply pipes, the valve is fairly simple to replace. Union fittings allow the valve to be removed without cutting the pipes.
So if you can get at the valve without having to cut up your wall and the valve is installed with plastic or copper pipes (or you have unions in the galvanized supply pipes), this is a pretty straightforward project.
Choosing a Replacement Valve
Unless you are going to make modifications to the wall, the type of valve you remove dictates the style you purchase. While you're checking out the different valves, take a close look at the installation instructions. Some valves are designed to have the supply pipes soldered directly into the valve. Others require threaded fittings.
You'll find a wide selection of transition fittings in copper, plastic, and galvanized steel. The fitting are designed to allow you to attach different piping systems to the new valve. Transition fittings allow you to connect copper pipe to existing galvanized pipe and the shower valve. If you have a propane torch and a tubing cutter, working with copper pipe isn't difficult, the same fittings are available in plastic, so if soldering isn't in your bag of tricks, plastic may be your best choice.
