PB leaks
PB leaks are not common, except at connections that were not made properly. Because of its flexibility and durability, PB pipe rarely gives plumbers problems with water leaks. It doesn't even normally burst under freezing conditions. There are, however, several times when the pipe is not put together properly, and this can result in water leaks.
Bad crimps. Bad crimps account for some leaks with PB pipe- If a crimping tool gets out of adjustment, and they do after extended use. The crimp ring may not be seated properly. If this is the case, the bad connection must be removed and a new one made.
PE leaks
PE leaks are not much of a consideration when talking about water distribution systems. PE pipe is used frequently for water services, but its use is very limited in water distribution systems. Cracked fittings and loose clamps are the most frequent causes of water leaks in PE piping. The fittings can be replaced, and the clamps can be tightened or replaced.
On the occasions when PE pipe develops pinhole leaks, there are a few easy ways to fix the problem. The best way to deal with the situation is to cut out the bad section of the piping and replace it. When this isn't convenient or possible, you can use repair clamps.
Repair clamps can be used to patch small holes in all types of piping. You can buy the clamps, or in some cases you make your own. In the case of PE pipe, rubber tape and a stainless steel pipe clamp will make a good repair on small holes. All you have to do is wrap rubber tape around the hole and clamp it into place.
CPVC water leaks
If you have worked with CPVC much, you know it is brittle, takes a long time for its joints to set up, and is famous for its after-the-fact leaks.
When you are troubleshooting a water distribution system made from CPVC piping, there is a lot to look for. You have to keep your eyes open for little cracks in the water pipe. Because of its makeup, CPVC will crack without a lot of provocation. These hairline cracks can be hard to find. In addition to cracks in the piping, you have to look for cracks in the threaded fittings. Fittings that have been cross-threaded are also common in CPVC systems. And to top it all off, CPVC pipe that is not supported properly can vibrate itself to the point of weakening joints that will leak water.
When you find a water leak in CPVC pipe or fittings, don't attempt to reglue the fitting. Cut it out and make a good connection with new materials. Attempting to patch old CPVC will more often than not result in frustration and continued problems.
You don't have to solder CPVC, but water in the line will still mess up your new joints. The water will seep into the cement and create a void that will leak water.
Cut the ends of the water pipe squarely and rough them up with some sandpaper. Using a cleaner and a primer prior to applying the cement is also a good idea. When you glue and connect the water pipe with the fitting, turn it if you can to make sure the cement gets good coverage. Don't turn the pipe loose right away. If you release your grip too soon, the pipe is likely to push out of the fitting to some extent, weakening the joint. Hold the connection in place as long as your patience will allow. CPVC takes a long time to set up, so don't move it or cut the water on too soon. New joints should set for at least an hour before being subject to water pressure.
